Tartu strengthens cooperation in Tokyo on business and urban development
Tartu City Government Press Release
/ The City of Tartu participated in international events and meetings held in Tokyo to develop business cooperation and share experiences in urban development
During the visit, the delegation took part in the GNETS city network meeting, the SusHi Tech conference, and a business seminar organised by the Estonian Investment Agency (EIS). Meetings were also held with Japanese companies and representatives of the Tokyo city government.
At the GNETS network meeting, Tartu was represented by Deputy Mayor Kertu Vuks, while at the SusHi Tech conference, Tartu’s business environment was presented by Roomer Tarajev, who works in business development.
According to Deputy Mayor Kertu Vuks, the GNETS meeting provided a valuable opportunity to exchange experiences with cities facing similar challenges. “Such cooperation helps us better understand which solutions work in a rapidly developing urban environment,” Vuks said.
Roomer Tarajev noted that cooperation with Japanese companies requires continuity and active communication. “Collaboration with Japanese companies requires ongoing contact and mutual visits. In spring, a new budget period begins in Japan, when large companies are actively looking for technological solutions for their development projects, which also creates opportunities for Tartu companies,” Tarajev explained.
Representatives of the City of Tartu also met with the Tokyo city government. The discussions focused on urban development topics, including balancing dense urban environments and green areas, improving planning and construction processes, designing pedestrian-friendly urban space, and involving residents in spatial decision-making.
The visit confirmed Tartu’s interest in developing targeted cooperation with Japanese partners in both business and urban planning, and laid the groundwork for future contacts and joint projects.
