The Tartu Food and Wine Festival, taking place from 2–4 August, is becoming one of the top food events in Estonia
29. juuli / Taking place for the fifth year, the Tartu Food and Wine Festival brings together Estonia’s gastronomes and international wine experts in the City of Good Thoughts. All those interested are invited to take part in the rich taste experiences.
On 2 August, the first day of the festival, street caterers will be offering taste experiences along Küüni Street, and all those interested will be able to enjoy a gourmet dinner at Restaurant Polpo. The newly expanded and much grander Wine Area will be opening its doors in a new location this year, located in the park on the corner of Poe and Küüni Street. The diverse programme awaits visitors at Tartu Market Hall and along the Emajõgi River promenade. During the evening, Lenna Kuurma, one of Estonia’s most beloved female artists, will be setting the musical mood.
On Saturday, 3 August, the focus of the food area, extending along Küüni Street and in the parks, will be on Estonian food and raw ingredients. According to tradition, the Taste of Tartu and the Tartu City Wine will once again be chosen, food-themed guided tours will be held, visitors are invited to enjoy a gourmet dinner at Restaurant Antonius, and Küüni Street will be extended with the spirited programme Kvartal’s Food Street: Tasty Bites. The festival’s children’s area will once again be located in the City Centre Park.
On 4 August, the third day of the festival, there will be a change in scenery from the city centre to Tammelinn, where Home Café Day will be taking place. Each year, within the framework of the festival, 35 extremely popular home cafés open their doors to visitors.
According to Assar Jõgar, Head Organiser for the Wine Area, this year’s Wine Area will provide a surprise with several updates. ‘In the expanded Wine Area Estonian wine sellers will be offering an even greater selection of wines and, for the first time, there will be a green area with its own grilling corner plus a Champagne Lounge. Top sommeliers from Toscana and Alsace will be arriving to judge and train wine connoisseurs,’ said Jõgar.
The Tartu Food and Wine festival programme is being led by restaurateur and head chef Joel Ostrat, musical entertainment is being offered by Puuluup, Popsid and Bossenova, along Küüni Street; and by The Baltinos and the Rodrigo Manfrinatti Band, in the Wine Area.
The co-organisers of the Tartu Food and Wine Festival are once again Vein ja Vine, Tammelinna Selts, restaurants Polpo and Antonius, Tartu Market, and Kvartal.
