Renovated Tartu Annelinn Upper Secondary School to open its doors

Tartu City Government Press Release

Tartu Annelinn Upper Secondary School

28. august 2020 / On Friday, 28 August, the thoroughly renovated Tartu Annelinn Upper Secondary School building and outdoor areas will be opened. During the course of construction works, the largest school in the City of Tartu was made energy efficient, and the building received a modern and flexible spatial solution.

‘Tartu’s Annelinn Upper Secondary School welcomes the new school year from a modern and inspiring school building, which creates completely new opportunities for the school family to study, play sports, enjoy hobbies, and work. The renovated school building offers an open learning environment to the school family, but it is also important that the diverse outdoor area attracts children to exercise more during breaks between classes,’ said Mayor Urmas Klaas.

During the renovations, the classrooms in the building located at Kaunase Avenue 68 were reconstructed, a spacious foyer and library area, coatrooms, art and technology classrooms, gymnasiums, and several areas around the building, where students can spend time during breaks between classes, were built. The school’s renewed outdoor areas offer students as many opportunities as possible for moving about, a stage was built in the U-shaped school building’s courtyard along with steps and a climbing and a sliding area in front of it. A natural grass football pitch with a five-meter-high fence was also built in the courtyard area.

The school building’s surroundings will be developed in the near future, with an athletic and rest area – along with a basketball court, outdoor weight room, bicycle riding square and parkour course – planned for plots located in close proximity. A sledging hill with a height of up to 3 metres is planned for the south side of the school’s courtyard.

Reconstruction work on the Annelinn Upper Secondary School was performed by Embach Ehitus OÜ. Reconstruction of the 9050 square meter building cost almost EUR 10 million. The reconstruction project was prepared by Sirkel and Mall OÜ.
