Three painters at the Tartu Art House

Tartu Art House

29. juuni 2018 / On Thursday, 5 July at 5 p.m. Indrek Aavik, Edgar Juhkov and Kaspar Tamsalu will open a joint painting exhibition „The Edge of Being” in the Tartu Art House. The exhibition is curated by Joanna Hoffmann.

Aavik, Juhkov and Tamsalu have studied together in the master’s programme of the Faculty of Fine Arts in the Estonian Academy of Arts. They are also united by the fact that before taking the conceptual curriculum of the EAA, they had graduated from bachelor’s programmes that have a strong technical basis: Aavik and Juhkov from the Painting Department of the University of Tartu and Tamsalu from Repin State Academy Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Saint Petersburg. The EAA’s method, that has moved away from technical skills, has enabled all three artists to develop an individual professional style that can often get lost in purely academic environments. Such symbiosis allows the artists to skilfully use traditional methods in a contemporary manner.

At the exhibition “The Edge of Being” the three authors depict our surrounding contemporary world through the perceptive approach of the artist. Aavik focuses on post-apocalyptic and deserted urban landscapes where desolate streets and abandoned car wrecks hint at the past activities of people. Juhkov turns towards the garden plots of the Tartu Chinatown where the presence of people is usually only perceptible through the atmosphere. Tamsalu has been inspired by people: their position, attitude and the gaze that has been turned away from those who have entered their space. The three artists form a multi-layered approach to the anthropogenic environment of the 21st century: distant and intimate, bygone and continuous, perceptible and explicit.

The exhibition will remain open until 29 July.
