Anna-Maria Saar tells stories through her jewellery
Tartu Art House
/ Thursday, 29 June at 18.00 Anna-Maria Saar’s personal exhibition “Stories of Beauty and Life” will be opened in the small gallery of the Tartu Art House.
Anna-Maria Saar is a jewellery artist who works with very heavy and extremely ephemeral materials. She considers the moments that jewellery represents and the stories that their presence tells the most significant part of her works. Besides earlier materials like dried sea kale and single strands of hair, the present exhibition includes materials like pollen and scars. The airiness and hesitations of the gallery space make the whole exhibition seem like a self-portrait of the artist.
Dutch art historian Liesbeth den Basten has stated earlier: “Anna-Maria Saar connects jewellery worn on the body with photography. Her works describe her personal experiences and human relations in general.” This, in turn, means that for Anna-Maria the best jewellery are the persons themselves.
Anna-Maria herself says: “My life contains special moments and tangible people. Some of them are sharp, some leave scars, some are memorable and influential. Sometimes I get stuck in them and in the places that I inhabit. Special moments can last a lifetime. There is focus, the lights are shining, vacuum is filled with sound and music is playing.”
Anna-Maria Saar (b 1988) has graduated in 2011 from the Jewellery and Blacksmithing Department of the Estonian Academy of Arts. She has participated in group exhibitions in Estonia, Finland and Israel and was invited to the travelling exhibition of Nordic jewellery „From the Coolest Corner”. Her previous personal exhibitions took place in 2014 in Amsterdam and in 2016 in Tallinn. Last year her work “Memory Map” was part of the urban space festival UIT in Tartu.
The exhibition will remain open until 23 July.
