13 May / The City of Tartu is set to sign a contract with transport company Bolt, which will begin offering an electric scooter rental service to residents of Tartu starting this month.

Deputy Mayor Raimond Tamm said that the electric scooters will diversify opportunities to move about in an environmentally friendly manner in the city. ‘Bolt has come away with positive experiences from various cities in terms of how to offer electric scooter service at a high level, and we are also hoping for good cooperation in Tartu. It is of primary importance to us that riding a scooter would be safe for both riders as well as fellow road users, and the parking of scooters would take place only in suitable locations', stated Tamm.

According to Thomas Tammus, Operations Manager at Bolt, the company is looking to open a scooter rental service in Tartu as soon as possible. ‘Initially we will begin using models from last season in Tartu but will be replacing them with newer ones on an on-going basis. We believe that using rental scooters will help people avoid gathering together on public transportation and in other vehicles, and will provide them with an additional mode of transportation where direct contact with other people is not necessary. The electric scooter will definitely become a valued means of transportation alongside local bicycle rentals’, commented Tammus.

Electric scooters can be rented using the same Bolt app that is used to order a car. To do so, click on the scooter icon located in the upper right-hand corner of the app and the app will switch over to scooter rental mode. The app displays the location of scooters in the city, with it being possible to unlock the desired scooter using its QR code. When you have ended your ride, park the scooter in safe location so that it does not obstruct traffic, preferably in the vicinity of a bicycle-park. Specific areas are marked on the map found within the app. Scooters are disinfected during the day and collected at the end of the day for charging.

Bolt scooters can travel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h, although each rider must make sure that the selected speed is safe for themselves as well as other road users. In certain areas, such as Old Town, the maximum speed of scooters is automatically limited. It is recommended that electric scooters be ridden on cycle tracks or, in the absence thereof, pavement. Scooters can be rented from the age of 16. In order to ride a scooter, all road users under the age of 18 must have a cyclist’s licence and must wear a helmet.

Electric scooters can be rented starting from May, and the season will last until weather conditions are no longer suitable for scooter traffic.
