/ On 28 May, on the occasion of the State visit of the Czech President Petr Pavel, the City of Tartu hosted a Czech - Estonian defense industry business matchmaking event that brought together representatives of 16 Czech companies, nearly 20 businesses from Tartu and Southern Estonia, as well as representatives of Czech public sector organizations supporting international business cooperation.

The event focused on identifying concrete opportunities for cooperation between companies. Participating Estonian businesses received detailed information about the Czech delegation beforehand, allowing them to identify the most relevant contacts and approach the event with clearly defined cooperation interests and business objectives.

According to Deputy Mayor of Tartu Priit Humal, the event highlighted the strong industrial and technological capabilities that exist in Tartu and Southern Estonia
alongside the region’s well-known startup ecosystem. “Tartu is widely recognized as Estonia’s leading startup city, but we also have strong competence in manufacturing, engineering, electronics and technology development. Events like this help create valuable international connections and open the door for long-term cooperation projects,” said Humal.

The Czech delegation included companies from the defense and technology sectors as well as representatives of organizations supporting international defense cooperation, business development and industrial partnerships.

Daniel Horák, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tallinn, highlighted that the event demonstrated strong mutual interest in closer cooperation between Czech and Estonian companies.

“Estonia and the Czech Republic share a strong focus on innovation, technology and security. Bringing companies together in a focused business
matchmaking format creates an excellent foundation for future partnerships and practical cooperation. It was a great pleasure to see the rather young people of this
student city coming to the matchmaking event to represent their startups. Czech participants found a lot of potential for new business partnerships following the
meetings in Talliin and Tartu,” said Horák.

According to Roomer Tarajev, Development Manager of Department of Business Development, the preparation process for the event itself revealed the depth of
industrial and technological capability present in Southern Estonia. “While preparing the event, it was genuinely surprising to discover how much cooperation potential exists across Southern Estonia - not only among defense sector companies, but also in traditional manufacturing businesses and startups whose competencies could support international defense and technology partnerships,” said Tarajev.

The event was organized in cooperation with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tallinn and the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
