Tanja Muravskaja’s portraits at the Tartu Art House
Tartu Art House
/ On Thursday, 19 October at 18.00 Tanja Muravskaja’s personal exhibition “Hero” will be opened in the large gallery of the Tartu Art House.
Estonia has joined the global defence structure that acts as an umbrella to the 28 states with the aim of preventing conflicts and assuring the security of its members. Although nobody yearns for the return of the Cold War, we still see joint exercises where soldiers from different countries that are stationed in Estonia participate and that are organized with the aim of discouraging possible aggression.
The exhibition mainly consists of portraits of the soldiers of the allied forces of NATO. Alongside them are Estonian boys and girls: the youth corps of the Estonian Defence League. These are portraits of the heroes of tomorrow who are preparing for their future that might also contain the possibility of defending us all with actual weapons.
Muravsakaja adds the following about the theme of the exhibition: “We believe that we see ripples of an impending danger and our hearts stop due to the horrors of the unknown. Estonian media paints our future as happy, secure and cloudless, but we and the rest of Europe actually live in an atmosphere of fear. Threatening language, instigations of war and the refugee crisis are our everyday reality.”
The exhibition hall is filled with respectful silence. As part of European culture, Estonia has also started commemorating the victims of our foreign missions and war veterans.
The exhibition will remain open until 12 November.
Tanja Muravskaja (b 1978) has earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in photography from the Estonian Academy of Arts and is studying for her doctorate in the same institution. Since 2007, she has had more than ten personal exhibitions in Estonia and abroad. In Tartu, her last personal exhibition was in 2010 in the art museum. Next year, Muravskaja has been nominated for the Köler Prize.
