/ On 1 August, the Tartu City Government will begin a two-month pilot project, during which time it will be mandatory to enter through the front door and exit via the rear doors between the hours of 19.00 in the evening and 7.00 in the morning.

Passengers with a pram may also use the rear doors to enter the bus in the evening, along with passengers using technical aids (e.g. wheelchair, walker), signalling their desire to enter via the button on the middle door, as is currently the case.

The City Government is considering requiring entry via the front door because, according to data analysis, there are a significant number of ticketless passengers riding Tartu buses, especially during the evening hours. When entering through the front door, the passenger must register at the first detector.

According to the Tartu Deputy Mayor Raimond Tamm, it is estimated that almost EUR 500,000 are lost in Tartu annually due to ticketless passengers, which could be used to develop bus traffic. ‘Entering through the front door disciplines passengers, this has been well demonstrated by the experience of other countries and cities.

In addition, it will make movement in and out of the bus smoother,’ Tamm added. The pilot project will run from 1 August through 30 September. Tartu Linnatransport will then analyse the data and feedback received, and a decision will be made on future action.
