Tartu City Day 2017 brings opera back into town

For the second year in a row the Tartu City Day is dedicated to opera and classical music in general, featuring a plethora of grand and more modest performers. This time opera will blend in with theatre.
29 June, Tartu City Day, will be like a small festival of opera and classical music in general, serving as a virtual bridge between such genres and those interpreters that would not usually engage with this kind of music.
The event will be marked with concerts by Peeter Oja and the Vanemuine Cello Quartet, Ivo Uukkivi and Kristjan Randalu, little giant Oliver Kõvask and soprano Maria Listra. Then there will be a special joint concert emphasising the mutual effect of different genres, with colleagues from the Vanemuine Theatre sharing the stage: actor Priit Strandberg, soprano Pirjo Jonas, tenor Rasmus Kull, baritone Simo Breede and others.
You can also enjoy classical opera in an unusual place, in the Tartu Market building that is awaiting renovation. There a total of six opera soloists from the Vanemuine Theatre will be accompanied by several choirs. Sopranos Karmen Puis and Merle Jalakas, mezzo-soprano Valentina Kremen, tenor Rasmus Kull, baritone Jaan Willem Sibul and bass Märt Jakobson will deliver popular opera and operetta numbers at this exclusive Estonian-language midday performance. The Market Opera Choir on 29 June will comprise members of the Tartu male choir called Akadeemiline Emajõgi and the female choir called Emajõe Laulikud.
Actor Pääru Oja with Indrek Kruusimaa and Arne Mikk from the Estonian National Opera in the capital city will also come to Tartu for the concerts and other performances. At 16:00 Arne Mikk will speak on the bright future of opera in his usual mellow manner on the opera barge departing from the floating venue of Sisevete Saatkond. At 23:00 it will be the turn of the theatre barge to cast off the anchor. Its captain for the night is Merle Jääger from the Vanemuine Theatre who has promised to play the jaw harp and, of course, to talk about theatre and Tartu.
This year the festivities will start in the afternoon of 28 June, with the University of Tartu’s symphonic orchestra performance in the Tartu Kaubamaja department store, with conductor Taavi Kull.
In the evening the gala concert at the Town Hall Square will provide a musical summary of the day, with performances by local and guest opera soloists and exponents with accompaniment by the same orchestra.
For the second year in a row Reigo Tamm, an opera soloist from the Vanemuine Theatre, is the artistic director of Tartu City Day. The event is organised by the Tiigi Community Centre.
