/ For the third year in a row, Green Destinations, an international organisation promoting the development of sustainable tourism, has featured Tartu in its TOP 100 list of sustainable destinations.

Tartu participated in this year’s competition with its Guide to Organising Environmentally Friendly Events. The Guide was prepared in cooperation between SA Tartu 2024 and consultancy firm Acento, and it is a practical tool for every event organiser. With the help of the Guide, the event organiser can find ways to be more environmentally friendly in their activities. All events included in the European Capital of Culture Tartu 2024 programme are organised in an environmentally friendly manner, and from July 2022 the goal is to ensure that all events organised in Tartu’s public space are based on the minimum requirements set forth in the Guide.

Since our goal is to stand out as the capital of culture precisely with our environmentally friendly event organisation, reaching the Top 100 success stories in the Green Event Guide is a clear sign that we have set our goals and steps correctly,’ said Helen Kalberg, Marketing Manager for the City of Tartu.

The prerequisite for inclusion in the list of green destinations is an outstanding success story, from which other sustainable tourist destinations have something to learn. In 2020, Tartu was awarded second place in the Environment and Climate category in the same competition, as the citywide Smart Bike Share and urban buses fuelled by Estonian green gas were recognised. Car-Free Avenue, which was recognised as one of the six best in the Environment and Climate Category, was presented as Tartu’s success story for 2021.

The Green Destinations Story Awards took place on 27 September 2022, in Athens.

The participation of Estonian destinations in the Green Destinations programme is financed by the European Regional Development Fund, with the programme being coordinated by the Enterprise Estonia and KredEx joint organisation.
